The shoreline along the De Hoop Marine Reserve offers spectacular rock pools. We hiked part of the Whale Trail, which has been described as the Rolls Royce of hiking trails. This five-day self-catered, self-guided trail offers you the option to have your luggage transported to your overnight stop. The daily distance allows you enough time to relax and admire the beautiful surroundings.

We opted for a day walk along the deserted coastline and for a game drive along the many gravel roads. Came twilight time, we looked for otters in the vlei, but were content with large flocks of waders on the shores.

What’s not to like about the combination of sea, sand dunes and rare fynbos plants on the plains? Add a few close encounters with bontebok and an adorable ostrich family. Our last evening was spent in the magnificently appointed Melkkamer Manor House which comes with a private chef. Pure bliss for our Valentine’s Day celebration!
